10-Course Program – International Accreditation Pending

Volunteer board members take on a significant responsibility. Your board deserves outstanding governance support that is tailored to roles, recognizes each member’s strengths, supports their deep understanding of the nonprofit sector, and elevates the organization and community you serve.

The ten courses of the Good Governance for Good Causes program are designed to span over a period of five months, providing participants with a comprehensive and immersive learning experience. This approach ensures that participants have the opportunity to absorb and integrate the knowledge and skills gained from each module, fostering a gradual and meaningful progression in their governance and leadership journey.

Module 1

Healthy Board & CEO Relationships

  • Gain a deeper understanding of their joint responsibility to commit to building and maintaining a healthy, trusting and caring relationship.
  • They acquire insight into their respective roles in working together to positively manage risk and the reputation of the non-profit organization and stakeholders they serve.
  • They develop a deeper awareness of how to communicate and work with one another.
  • They gain skills and techniques to inform and educate the media and stakeholders on the good work the organization does.

Module 2

Board Membership – Roles & Responsibilities

  • Gain insight into the best practices of non-profit boards and the roles and responsibilities of the Board of Directors.
  • Explore the differences between the various types of non-profit boards and their 10 responsibilities.
  • Learn the defining characteristics of non-profit boards and their legal and fiduciary responsibilities.
  • Apply your learning as a team of community servant leaders.

Module 3

Inner Work of Leaders

  • Gain direction for developing your Personal Values Statement and Personal Mission Statement.
  • Learn the inner workings of a collaborative board mindset and heartset.
  • Explore the Five (5) Leadership Practices for leadership inner growth.
  • Acquire the skills to build a human-centered board community.
  • Gain the ability to apply the Eight (8) Principles of a Human-Centred Board Community.

Module 4

Diversity of Thought

  • Gain awareness and thorough understanding of the need for diversity of thought amongst board members in addition to ensuring a diversity, equity, inclusion, (DEI+) and belonging mindset and practices are incorporated into decision-making.
  • Acquire the ability to recognize differing perspectives, approaches and viewpoints as well as all forms of discrimination and biases and their impact on the organization.
  • Develop inclusive language, culture and guiding principles as they pertain to board governance and practices.
  • Learn to incorporate DEI strategies into non-profit strategies and sustainability.

Module 5

Ethical Leadership and Servant Leadership

  • Gain discernment, understanding and applied techniques for leading with integrity.
  • Explore insights into the dynamics of ethical leadership and how to apply them to decision-making.
  • Delve into the five core traits of a servant leader and apply the 10 principles of servant leadership.
  • Learn to lead with a mind, heart and spirit approach in a no-excuses environment.
  • Develop and reflect on a personalized legacy document that can be applied to non-profit work.

Module 6

Emotional Wisdom

  • Gain comprehensive insight into the components that comprise an emotionally intelligent leader.
  • Learn how to apply emotional wisdom at boardroom table during decision-making.
  • Acquire an understanding of the domains of Emotional Intelligence (EQ-i 2.0) and how they impact relationships and communication.
  • Engage in self-awareness, self-reflection, self-regulation and social awareness.
  • Learn to apply empathy and emotional rigor within non-profit organizations.

Module 7

Intra, Inter, and Cross-Sectoral Collaboration

  • Gain leadership skills required to work collaboratively within organizations, amongst organizations and between sectors.
  • Explore a deep dive into the four key drivers for collaborations and the triggers for developing partnerships, integrations and amalgamations.
  • Learn the differences between intra, inter and cross-cultural collaborations as well as the movement towards Collective Impact and Community Impact.

Module 8

Non-Profit Governance and Advocacy

  • Gain a deeper understanding of advocacy, collaborative advocacy and a government relations approach to advocacy.
  • Explore the difference between advocacy in non-profit and for-profit organizations.
  • Participants will learn the top five (5) characteristics of an advocate.
  • Gain leadership tools and techniques to build constituency and learn to apply principles and criteria to sustain a Long-term Advocacy Strategy.

Module 9

Big Data, AI, Internet of Everything

  • Gain an appreciation of the role of Big Data in non-profits to capture data, provide analysis and reveal insights for decision-making, fundraising and strategic direction in non-profits.
  • Delve into machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) and how to apply them in organizations to drive growth, increase financial controls and create efficiencies.
  • Explore the risks, concerns and advantages of the Internet of Everything (IoE).
  • Learn to assess and analyze the future state of your organization with adoption of big data, AI and IoE.

Module 10

Capstone In-Class Assignment and Evaluation

  • Course participants will work together as one Governance Board of the same hypothetical non-profit organization. The facilitator will act as the CEO or Executive Director of the same non-profit.
  • Each member of the board (participant) will randomly select a role with instructions on the non-profit board. The CEO will present three different agenda items to the non-profit board for discussion and decisions.
  • After each agenda item, the board members will randomly select a different role with different instructions. During the Capstone Assignment, the performance of the board members (participants) will be evaluated by two program assessors based on set criteria.
  • Accreditation is based successfully applying the learnings from the nine-course Good Governance for Good Causes program during the simulated board meeting.
